Poor Coverage At Home Or The Office? A BlackBerry And Orange UMA Could Help.
March 11, 2009
If you are in the unfortunate situation where you don’t get good mobile coverage at home or the office due to geographic reasons then you may be in luck.
Using one of the Wi-Fi enabled BlackBerries (8320, 8900, 9000 etc.) on the Orange network in the UK you can connect via your broadband wireless router and make calls as normal. It uses a system called UMA which Orange allows and is an absolute godsend for users who live in remote locations where coverage is poor.
It doesn’t work with all internet providers but does with most.
To find out how you may benefit from UMA on Orange for your business then please call me on 01204 595335 (ask for David) or you can email here.
Is Your BlackBerry Rollerball Sticking?
March 5, 2009
Over the past few years I have processed lots of exchanges of the new trackball style BlackBerries due to the rollerball sticking or not rolling in one or more directions. It became accepted as “one of those things” that goes wrong and was annoying.
After moaning to Conor at RIM UK, he advised me to get some standard kitchen de-greaser, put a tiny drop on my finger and roll the trackball around.
The next time it happened was on my own 8800 and we just happened to have some Mr Muscle Kitchen Cleaner in that stated that it was a de-greaser. I tried, not expecting much (sorry Conor!) but lo and behold it worked! Scrolling restored in all four directions again – happy days.
The same day, I had a client with the same problem and it fixed his too. Since then , my bottle of Mr Muscle has never let me down !!!
You see the problem is mostly caused by grease and dirt from your fingers. You know the scenario; you’re tucking in to lunch and your KFC or cream cake is great, but then your BlackBerry beeps and you can’t help yourself, you have to check your email. No time to wipe your hands, you must know who’s contacted you! That’s why the problems occur but hopefully now you have a solution.
Please note, this has only been tested on Mr Muscle and do not, under any circumstance, pour the cleaner on to the device. Just a teeny drop on your finger should do the job.
BlackBerry Quick Tips
February 28, 2009
I aim to update this page regularly with hints and tips for using your BlackBerry.
- If you have a BIS set up, it is better to create a web account rather than set up email on the device. See your network for the web address of their BlackBerry BIS set up.
- A quick way to lock the keypad on most BlackBerries is to hold the star key (“*” on the “A” key) down for a few seconds. To unlock, press * and the green dial button.
- If you have let your inbox fill up and find that you have hundreds of emails but don’t wish to spend time deleting them one by one then highlight a date bar in your in box, press the application button and choose “Delete Prior” then confirm. This will delete all emails previous to the date you selected. If there are any emails you wish to keep prior to using this function the highlight those emails and again, pree the applcation key and choose “Save”. Even though these vanish from your inbox, you can view them by selecting “View saved messages” from the menu.
- To save on battery life on Wi-Fi enabled devices, turn the Wi-Fi connection off when not in a Wi-Fi area. Turning Bluetooth off when not in use also helps.
- To select text to copy and paste press the Alt key then press the rollerball then roll over the text you wish to highlight. When done press the rollerball again and select copy. By pressing the rollerball in the area you wish to paste the text you can then select “Paste”.
